GIT insurance only covers goods
Goods in Transit (often referred to as GIT) Insurance covers items from theft, loss or damage while they are being transported by vehicle from one place to another in the course of business.
As the name suggests, GIT insurance only covers goods while they are in transit, not while they are in the vehicle at the depot. However, if you are storing the goods, we can look at adding an element of warehouse cover, as long as it is only for these goods, and is within the minimum conditions set out for the storage – usually UKWA @ £100 Per Tonne.
Whilst GIT insurance is not actually required by law, any business offering their services with delivering purchased goods or removals for example, would be recommended to consider it. There are different conditions for which goods can be carried under which attach to a Goods in Transit policy. For example, refrigerated goods would need a higher level of cover than potentially palletised dry goods.
Amazon and Maritime have specific conditions attached to them which they must prove they have in force before any work carrying goods for them will be given.
The policy itself can have the turnover split over the different covers – see table 2 as an example.

If materials, goods or cargo are lost, stolen or damaged in transit, claiming on Goods in Transit cover may make it possible to recover the cost. Transport, courier and haulage businesses are also subject to delays, usually when items are mislabelled, delivered to the wrong address or signed for by the wrong person. If a delivery cannot be made at the time specified, GIT insurance may enable them to claim for the cost to the business – when the recipient tries to recover any costs incurred for example. Goods in Transit insurance may also include items left in the vehicle overnight, as long as the vehicle is locked and parked in a secure place.
Different policies offer different levels of cover, so it is important to disclose the type of cover and frequency of the cargo being carried, and to be realistic about its value as the maximum amount paid in a claim will attach to the goods which could leave you with less than the load is worth.
Whilst we make every effort to ensure the correct coverage, and any additional specifications the insurer may have like having the vehicle locked and parked in a secure place. We always suggest you check the policy for details and clarify anything if you are uncertain.
